Ph.D. candidates Kyle Latty and Emily Kwapis, both DoD SMART Fellows, each presented an invited talk in the “Nuclear” session at the annual SciX conference in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Kyle’s talk was titled “Laser Ablation Spectroscopy for Radioactive Plume Detection” and discussed his work on radiation plume tracking using laser based techniques in support of the DTRA IIRM University Research Alliance.

Emily’s talk was titled “Spectroscopic Signatures and Oxidation Characteristics of Laser-produced Cerium Plasmas” and discussed her work on laser plasma surrogates for nuclear detonations and actinide plasma chemistry in support of the NNSA MTV Consortium.

Emily was also honored in the Tuesday evening Society of Applied Spectroscopy Award Ceremony Wine and Cheese event where she was presented with her award for outstanding graduate researcher in atomic spectroscopy the “Atomic Student Award”.
